Kimbie called at about 3 pm Hawaii time. She had just finished an 11-mile hike at Haleakala Crater and said it was really great. The first several miles they hiked through a dusty lava field (top photo). Then they went a few miles through grassy meadows, where she got a picture with a Hawaiian goose, called a nene. After that, it was a steep uphill climb in the fog through dense tropical terrain. Because of the fog, just when they thought they were reaching the top, the next "top" would come into view. The peak in the picture turned out to be just the first of many. That's Marina and Tara with her in the picture. She sounded like she thought it was extremely cool. When she called they were waiting for everyone else to finish the hike. Then they had a long drive back to Lahaina. Said the sunrise this morning was good. It's been a long day. She was planning to do her laundry, eat dinner and then go to bed. Tomorrow morning she's doing an optional boat trip to go snorkeling with dolphins in the wild. Then they go to the whaling museum in Lahaina.
